Newry police welcome sentence for armed robber of Newry bookmakers
Local police have welcomed the four years imprisonment imposed on 43 year old Eddie O’Neill who pleaded guilty to the armed robbery of a Bookmakers in the Newry area on 30th January 2014.
He also received 2 years to run concurrently in relation to possession of a firearm with intent to commit an indictable offence.
Speaking to Newry Times, Detective Constable Hugh McKay said, “Through community co-operation and a rigorous investigation we were able to identify Eddie O’Neill as the person responsible for this robbery.
“The sentence handed down should serve as a warning to others who are involved in criminality. Anyone who gets involved in such activity should realise that there are considerable personal consequences when they are apprehended.
“I would ask the community to continue to work with us to reduce crime in our local communities and keep people safe,” he added.
In relation to the armed robbery O’Neill will serve 2 years in prison and 2 years on licence and in relation to possession of a firearm with intent to commit an indictable offence he will serve 1 year (concurrently) in prison and 1 year (concurrently) on licence.
