‘We’re committed to South Down fishing industry’ – Ruane

Sinn Féin MLA Caitriona Ruane has said that the investment in the fishing industry by Agriculture Minister Michelle O’Neill is testament to the commitment of Sinn Féin to see the industry flourish.

Speaking to Newry Times, Ruane said, “In response to a question that I submitted to the Minister on the level of funding to the fishing industry in South Down it is clear to see that more money has been made available than ever before.

“In total over £7.6m has been invested in the fishing industry since 2007 with over £2.8m being allocated in 2014 alone. The fishing industry is an important part of the economic life in South Down so it is crucial that we protect our traditional industries as we move forward.

“We have also seen the growth of the agri food industry associated with the fishing fleet especially in the food processing sector. The allocation of these monies is testament to the commitment of Sinn Fein to see the industry protected and developed in the months and years ahead,” she added.
