Hearty slams ‘thugs’ after latest dumping incident
Sinn Fein councillor Terry Hearty has condemned those responsible for dumping and burning toxic waste in an Area of Special Scientific Interest.
Last Friday morning walkers discovered a burning cube of what is believed to be the waste left over from fuel laundering in a bog near Cregganbane Lake.
Councillor Hearty described the dumping as a despicable act. “This is an absolutely despicable act carried out by thugs with no respect or regard for this area or its community,” he said.
“Dumping this toxic waste into bog-lands and near waterways endangers the local population and wildlife and damages the image of the area, an image we’re trying to promote in order to encourage tourists to come here and see what we have to offer.
“This specific incident was particularly disgusting as the place they dumped their toxic waste in is an Area of Special Scientific Interest.
“Areas of Special Scientific Interest are areas of land that have been identified by scientific survey as being of the highest degree of conservation value due to unique flora, fauna or geological features.
He added, “They are a key factor when it comes to attracting visitors to the area and are crucial to the local environment. We cannot continue to allow these thugs to destroy our countryside for their own personal gain.”
