88 Newry staff offered voluntary redundancy

Newry & Armagh DUP MLA William Irwin has spoken of his concern at the news that 88 staff within the Newry HMRC office are to be offered voluntary redundancy.

Irwin said that HMRC had previously given a commitment to put 94 people from the Custom House office in Newry within a redeployment pool.

He told Newry Times, “I am very concerned that going by this latest correspondence from HMRC only 6 people have secured an alternative post following being placed in the redeployment pool. HMRC state that this is due to limited opportunities within the service.

“I am very concerned at this issue and I have written to HMRC again to register my concerns given that so many people are now in this situation.”

He added, “HMRC stated that those who do not take up voluntary redundancy could face compulsory redundancy therefore I would question the resolve of HMRC in terms of actively trying to find alternative posts for the staff affected.”
