Man remanded in custody after serious Newry assault

Detectives are appealing for witnesses following a serious assault in Newry during the early hours of Thursday 1st January.

At around 2.30am it was reported that an altercation took place between a number of men in the area of Canal Street.

As a result a 28 year old man sustained serious injuries, including a broken nose, fractures to his eye socket and jaw and bruising to his face and body.

A 21 year old man was arrested in the Newry area in connection with the incident and appeared before Newry Magistrates Court charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent and was remanded in custody.

Detective Constable Lisa McAteer is appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident or anyone who has any information to contact CID at Ardmore Police Station on the non-emergency number 101.
