Two men sentenced over ATM thefts in Newry

Following convictions for a total of twelve counts of theft, three counts of possession of articles for the use of/or in connection with fraud and possession of criminal property, two men were today sentenced at Newry Crown Court.

Marian Ciobanica was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment whilst Vasile Orbisor was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment suspended for three years.

The offences were committed between 24th October and 1st November 2013 and involved targeting ATM machines at banks in Newry, Banbridge, Lisburn, Lisburn Road, Finaghy and Belfast with money trapping devices.

Welcoming today’s sentencing, Investigating Officer, Detective Constable Andrea Ewart told Newry Times, “Following a complicated and time consuming investigation, I am pleased that the two men responsible for a trail of crime across the country have been stopped and brought to justice.

“I have worked closely with staff from the four banks affected in order to secure best evidence and, ultimately, a successful outcome to this case.”
