Solo exhibition by Ciaran Magill in Newry

Born in Newry in 1978, multi-award winning artist Ciaran Magill presents his 10th solo exhibition on the theme of danger in the landscape.

The large-scale paintings depict explosions from crashed aeroplanes, while softer works present “no immediate danger” but allude to a sense of foreboding.

Using multiple layers, combined with scratching and scoring into the surface, Magill’s new series offers the most dynamic and vibrant body of work to date.

Ciaran Magill studied at the University of Ulster, graduating with a BA (Hons) degree in Fine and Applied Arts in 2009. His landscape paintings capture a spooky eeriness, simultaneously threatening, yet alluring.

The hypnotic charm of his pictures has appealed to many private and corporate collectors, most notably the Open University and DIAGEO, the latter having also awarded him “Emerging Artist of the Year” in 2009.

In 2011 and 2013, Magill won awards from the Arts Council of Northern Ireland. Recent international group exhibitions include galleries at the Museum of New Art (Michigan USA) University of Florida, Mercer University (Georgia, USA), Long Island University (New York) and Raccolte Frugone Museum, Genoa (Italy).

In Northern Ireland he has shown at the Ormeau Baths Gallery, Golden Thread, ArtTank, Catalyst Arts and the Naughton Gallery. This is his second solo show at The Sean Hollywood Arts Centre Newry.
