£23,000 music recording system for Magnet Young Adult Centre, Newry
Social Development Minister, Mervyn Storey MLA, has visited the Magnet Young Adult Centre in Newry to view a new £23,000 music recording system funded by his Department.
The new equipment has enabled the Centre’s existing recording studio to be transformed into a state of the art digital arts centre providing a forum for young musicians to develop their music skills across a range of spectrums including music production and live performance.
Speaking after a live performance by Paul Loughran, who has benefited directly from the new equipment, Minister Storey said, “I am very impressed by this unique youth facility, not only is the Magnet Young Adult Centre used by young musicians and students, they actually manage and run it too.
“Having young people fully invested in the Centre is, I am sure, the key to its success and I am sure that the commitment and dedication of those who use the Centre will stand them in good stead in years to come.
He added, “It is encouraging to see how Neighbourhood Renewal funding, together with effective partnership working, has helped enhance the learning and development of young people within the Newry area and I look forward to hearing more from Paul and the many other talented young musicians who use the Centre in the future.”
The Magnet Young Adult Centre is a vibrant and modern youth centre which is unique in that it is managed entirely by young people. It has been in operation for 21 years and caters for young people aged 15-25 years, many of whom are from the Newry Neighbourhood Renewal area.
Minister Storey was given a tour of the Centre by Chairperson, Jaydee Fegan, where he had the opportunity to see the wide range of activities within the Centre, and to chat to the young people involved in projects such as personal development programmes, accredited training programmes and youth exchange projects.
The £22,878 grant falls under the Neighbourhood Renewal Investment Fund which aims to close the gap between the quality of life for people in the most deprived neighbourhoods and the rest of society.
