Mayor Hughes warns about Newry burglaries

Fews area councillor and Mayor of Newry and Mourne Daire Hughes has urged vigilance after a number of burglaries in the area in recent days.

In the early hours of Wednesday morning a garage was broken into on the Chancellors Road.

Speaking about the incident Mayor Hughes said, “Thieves who came equipped to carry out this crime, in what I believe was a targeted incident, damaged a garage door in their efforts to gain access.

“They escaped with hundreds of pounds of garden tools and equipment, leaving the victims out of pocket and with damage to repair. I believe that this was not the only incident on that night and again garden equipment was taken.

Hughes added, “I appeal to residents to be vigilant and ensure that all homes and outhouses are secured and all equipment locked up.

“These thieves will continue to blight our communities with their anti social activities and the only way to deal with them is to notify police if you see anything suspicious in your area.”
