Anger after funding stopped for Irish language magazines

SDLP MLA for Newry and Armagh Dominic Bradley has expressed his anger at the unwillingness of Foras na Gaeilge to continue funding the established Irish language magazines, including An tUltach which has been publishing for 90 years.

Speaking after a meeting which he chaired between Foras and the Chair of the An tUltach in Armagh, Bradley said: “The Foras strategy for the future of magazine publication in the Irish language is as yet unclear with only vague ideas of what may lie ahead.

“The decision to end the funding to existing magazines was taken in an extremely hasty fashion, without any transitional plans or real opportunities to allow existing magazines to examine the possible models for future publications.

“An tUltach and the other existing publications have served the Irish speaking community extremely well down through the years and it would be extremely foolish to dispense with them in such a summary fashion without fully exploring the role they can play in providing reading material for the Irish speaking population in the future.

Bradley added, “I will be asking Board members of Foras na Gaeilge to re-visit this decision with a view to including An tUltach and the other publications in future funding arrangements.”
