‘EU programmes must deliver for Youth and Cross-Border Development’ – Ruane

Sinn Féin MLA Caitriona Ruane has called on Finance Minister, Simon Hamilton to ensure bureaucracy in EU funding programmes in the North is kept to a minimum.

Ruane was commenting on the Minister’s statement from the North/South Ministerial Council on the Peace IV and INTERREG V SEUPB programmes.

“The Minister must make sure that the bureaucracy around these programmes is kept to a minimum,” Ruane told Newry Times.

“Too often community groups and others trying to create jobs and tackle youth unemployment have faced unnecessary hurdles as a result of bureaucracy in the Department of Finance. Peace IV and INTERREG V funding is not as substantial as it could have been due to the British government’s demand for cuts to the EU budget.

“It is imperative therefore that the available funds deliver for local communities, address youth unemployment and assist in cross-border development. The Minister’s DUP colleagues at Westminster and EU level supported the British government’s demand for a reduced EU budget in line with its austerity agenda.

Ruane added, “It’s vital therefore that he makes access to these funds as hassle free as possible.”
