Rogers welcomes £134m schools enhancement programme

South Down SDLP MLA Seán Rogers has welcomed the announcement from the Education Minister in respect of the Schools Enhancement Programme.

SDLP MLA Sean Rogers

Rogers, who is also the party’s Education spokesperson, said, “I was delighted to hear that a number of local schools have been included in the list announced by the Minister for Education under the Schools Enhancement Programme.

St Joseph’s, Carnacaville (outside Newcastle) has been given funding to take the school through the design stage to allow for the refurbishment of the existing building, extensions to replace mobiles with new modern classrooms and a new multi-purpose hall.

Our Lady’s Grammar, Sacred Heart Grammar and Rathore Special School – all from Newry have been included in the Schools Enhancement Programme as have St Mark’s in Warrenpoint and Knockevin in Downpatrick.

Rogers added, “This is obviously great news for the wider school families – pupils, teachers and staff but it is also excellent news for the construction industry. I hope that these projects, when realised, will have tapped into the local workforce and made a significant contribution to the local economy.

“This really is excellent news and I look forward to all of these schemes progressing and works commencing on site.”
