Shock at death of Norbrook boss Eddie Haughey

SDLP MLA for Newry and Armagh and Party Finance spokesperson Dominic Bradley has expressed his shock at the death of Edward Haughey (Lord Ballyedmond) owner of Norbrook Laboratories, Newry’s largest employer, and of members of his staff.

Commenting on the reports Bradley said, “Lord Ballyedmond’s death is a huge blow to his family and friends and to his employees in Newry and elsewhere.

“He was one of our main employers and a mainstay of the economy in the city of Newry and district, providing upwards of 1,500 well-paid jobs in his three factories and research facilities locally.

“Eddie Haughey, as he was better known locally, was a self-made man who built up a successful international company which contributed enormously to the growth of the Newry economy from an unemployment black spot in the late sixties, early seventies to its present comparative prosperity.

“Many people locally are gratefully for the huge contribution he made to our economy and to the provision of sustainable jobs.

Bradley added, “I would like to extend my sincere condolences to his wife and children and to the families of his staff who also died in this accident.”
