Mourne Way Marathon Scoops Top NI Award

The Mourne Way Marathon, created and managed by local company 26 Extreme, has been named Best Challenge Event of 2013 in the national OutdoorNI.com Awards.

The annual awards invite votes from the public via the Outdoor NI website and Facebook.

This year over 1500 votes were cast and the Mourne Way off-road marathon secured 39.4% to take the top spot in the Off Road event category.

The Marathon is series of annual events (including an Ultra event, Marathon, half marathon, 10/5k runs and a Challenge Walk) set within the Mournes Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The event was established 5 years ago and has grown to become one of the biggest off road dates on the summer calendar for Irish and International runners attracting over 1000 participants to Rostrevor every summer.

Director Rowan McMahon told Newry Times, “The growth of off road trail based running events has been huge in recent years. In 2009 350 runners took part and last year over 1000 people visited the region to get involved in this iconic event.

“The terrain and vantage points offered by the Mourne Way are truly spectacular and we’re thrilled that so many people voted for the Marathon to establish it as a NI ‘Best’ and brand it as an award winning experience,” Rowan added.

26 Extreme is the brain child of local Warrenpoint based outdoor enthusiasts Ian Cumming and Rowan McMahon.

The company are established experts in delivering innovative marathon and Ultra events across Ireland and also provide professional event management services to cycling, running and multisport events and charity challenges across Ireland.

This year 26 Extreme have partnered with Oliver Harkin from Primed Coaching, Newry to create a complimentary series of training plans for all 26 Extreme Events to add value to the 26 Extreme experience.

Oliver has over a decade of coaching experience in training beginners to elite athletes in swimming, cycling and running for triathlon and endurance events including Double Ironman, English Channel Swim and the Race Around Ireland.
