Man receives suspended sentence at Newry Court for police attack

A 27 year old man has been sentenced to six months imprisonment, suspended for 18 months, after pleading guilty to a number of offences at Newry Magistrates’ Court.

Stoyan Gaytandsier pled guilty to criminal damage, possession of an offensive weapon and assault on police and was also fined £300 fine.

The charges related to an incident in the Newry Street area of Newtownhamilton on Saturday, 25th January.

At 6pm on the day in question, police received a report of an intoxicated male damaging a car with a stick. Response officers attended immediately and located the man in a nearby property.

Gaytandsier confronted police at the front door with the baseball bat. Officers gave a number of warnings before using CS spray.

The man then made his way to the back of the house where he was restrained by police and arrested. One police officer sustained injuries during the incident.
