Launch of Newry and Mourne Pilot Community Safety Warden Initiative
The Newry and Mourne Policing and Community Safety Partnership (PCSP) formally launched the Community Safety Warden Initiative at its meeting on Monday night.
The PCSP had identified the need to address the level of night time related accidents and attacks often fuelled by alcohol, and one of the multi faceted approached to address this was via the introduction of a Pilot Community Warden scheme.
The Wardens will be in place for a trial period to explore the effectiveness of reducing antisocial behaviour and providing reassurance to local communities.
The Warden scheme is only one part of a wider programme being undertaken by the PCSP to address violence associated with the night time economy. Other initiatives include the Just add Water campaign promoted by the Civic Alcohol and Drugs Forum and the Get Home Safe Advice Campaign.
The Wardens were in place over the busy Christmas period and were warmly received by the general public, taxi firms, fast food premises and night club door staff. The Wardens will be a visible presence at weekends throughout January and February.
The Wardens will also be visible 2 days per week in and around Newry. Members of the public can contact the Wardens for information or assistance on tel: 07580809974.
If you are a young person that socialises in Newry put the number in your phone. Use it if you feel vulnerable, for example if you get separated from your friends contact the wardens for support. Members of the public should continue to contact the Police where necessary and in an emergency dial 999.
