The city centre blaze, which was reported to police just after 11:00pm on Saturday night, was being treated as ‘suspicious’ by Newry PSNI.

Police say the 38 year old female victim was originally from the Birmingham area of England.

Speaking to Newry Times, a spokesman for the police stated, “Police can confirm that they are in attendance at the scene of a fatal fire that occurred on the evening of Saturday 11th January in the Georges Lane area of Newry.

“The investigation is ongoing but foul play is no longer suspected and there is no evidence to suggest at this stage that the death was anything other than a tragic accident. The victim is not from the local area and police continue to liaise with her family in England.

The spokesman added, “Officers are keen to speak to two men who were in the Mill Street/Georges Lane area on Saturday night at around 11pm, who observed the fire and raised the alarm.

“Police would ask these men to contact detectives in Newry on 0845 600 8000. Police would also appeal to anyone who was in the area around this time to contact them on the same number.”
