Police identify Newry fire death woman

Police investigating a fatal fire in the Georges Lane area of Newry on Saturday 11th January have formally identified the female who lost her life.

Police say the 38 year old female was originally from the Birmingham area of England.

Enquiries are ongoing and a post mortem is due to take place today, 13th January, 2014.

The city centre blaze, which was reported to police just after 11:00pm on Saturday night, is being treated as suspicious by Newry PSNI.

Detectives investigating the fire say they are keen to speak to two males.

At around 11pm, two males walked down Mill Street. They stopped at the junction with Georges Lane and one proceeded on to Georges Lane.

The males observed the fire and raised the alarm and emergency services were contacted.

Police are keen to speak to these males and are asking them to contact detectives in Newry on 0845 600 8000. Police would also appeal to anyone who was in the area around this time to contact them on the same number.

SDLP MLA for Newry and Armagh, Dominic Bradley expressed his shock at the death of the woman.

Speaking after visiting the location Bradley said, “My first thoughts are with the family and relations of the deceased. This is terrible news for a family to receive, made worse by the tragic circumstances.

He added, “On behalf of the community here I extend sympathy to the family following this very sad incident.”
