Woman dies in ‘suspicious’ Newry fire

A woman has died following a house fire in Newry last night.

The woman died in a fire in the Georges Lane area of Newry

The city centre blaze, which was reported to police just after 11:00pm last night, is being treated as suspicious by Newry PSNI.

Newry Times understands the woman is believed to be English.

Speaking to Newry Times, a spokesman for the police stated, “Police can confirm that they are in attendance at the scene of a fatal fire that occurred on the evening of Saturday 11th January in the Georges Lane area of Newry.

The spokesman added, “At this stage, police are treating the fire as suspicious. There are no further details at this time, however anyone who knows anything about this incident is asked to contact Ardmore Police Station on 0845 600 8000.”

Sinn Féin Councillor Charlie Casey said he believed the woman was in her 20s but was not originally from the area. “This is very grim news coming from a quiet part of Newry and my thoughts are with the family of the deceased woman,” Casey said.

“Local people have told me that they believe the lady was not local and I have spoken to the PSNI who are treating the death as suspicious.

Casey added, “I urge anyone with information relating to this incident to contact the PSNI and again I offer my condolences to the family.”
