Illegal dumping in Hilltown condemned

SDLP representatives in South Down have condemned those responsible for dumping in Hilltown.

South Down MLA Karen McKevitt and Crotlieve Councillor Gillian Fitzpatrick were on site at the Mullaghgariff Road where household waste was dumped illegally.

McKevitt commented “The people of Hilltown take great pride in keeping the village clean and tidy so it is disappointing that a minority find it acceptable to pollute this beautiful area.

“We have free landfill waste sites available to the public so there is absolutely no excuse to dump household waste in the countryside. The new Minister for Environment Mark H Durkan is taking a strong stance on matters involving illegal dumping and I hope this will reduce the number of instances going forward.”

SDLP Crotlieve Councillor Gillian Fitzpatrick added, “I would call on those involved in these activities to cease immediately. Those responsible need to be reprimanded for their actions and I would urge anyone who notices any of this activity or has any information about it, to contact Newry and Mourne council and report it as soon as possible.

“Let’s work together to keep our countryside clean and beautiful.”
