Sinn Féin MLA Megan Fearon has welcomed the passing of an Assembly motion to produce a sexual orientation strategy. Speaking to Newry Times, Fearon stated, “The opportunity to debate this motion allowed us to highlight the inequalities and injustices that are faced by the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender community. “It is important that we bring equality in all aspects of life to everyone in the North and this includes the LGBT community. “The production of such a strategy would assist MLAs to bring forward policies that would protect the rights of the LGBT community on everyday issues from adoption to marriage equality. “The passing of this motion will now put an emphasis on bringing forward the strategy as we have been waiting for seven years for it to be produced and this is unacceptable. Fearon added, “I am now calling on those parties opposed to a sexual orientation strategy to work with the majority of people in bringing this strategy forward immediately. It is clear that the blockage on this rests with the DUP and I am calling on them publicly to come on board with Sinn Féin in pursuing equality for all.”
