Ó Muirí welcomes additional funding for Irish language broadcasting sector

Sinn Féin’s election candidate Barra Ó Muirí has welcomed news that the Irish Language Broadcast Fund (ILBF) will receive further funding during 2015-16.

Speaking to Newry Times, Ó Muirí said,”The Irish Language Broadcast Fund was an important development which resulted from Sinn Féin’s negotiations with the British Government.

“The Irish language broadcast and media sector has developed remarkably in recent years, providing top-end productions, and good quality employment and training opportunities.

“However, there has always been some longer-term uncertainty over the funding to support the sector. I know that representatives of the sector and the ILBF have met with Culture Minister Carál Ní Chuilín,” he explained.

“Minister Ní Chuilín recently reaffirmed her support for transfer of broadcasting powers to the north, and she is committed to trying to establish more stable funding arrangements for the Irish language broadcast sector.

Ó Muirí added, “Yesterday’s announcement that funding will continue in 2015-16 will come as a welcome boost to the sector. Sinn Féin will work with the Minister in the time ahead to ensure transfer of broadcasting powers and to mainstream sustainable long-term funding to support Irish language broadcasting.”
