‘Violence against women unacceptable’ – Ruane

Sinn Féin MLA Caitriona Ruane has called for more action to protect women from domestic violence after attending a coffee morning hosted by Women’s Aid in Sean Hollywood’s Arts Centre in Newry.

Speaking to Newry Times, Ruane said, “I attended this coffee morning to mark ‘International Violence for the Elimination of Violence against Women’ and I would like to thank Women’s Aid for organising it.

“Violence against women is still one of the major crimes that the PSNI are tackling with over 27,000 incidents recorded each year. It is important that we raise awareness of this violence and show that it is not acceptable and this was one of the reasons for the coffee morning.

“It is also proven that incidents of domestic violence rise over the Christmas period and I would call on women not to tolerate it.

Ruane added, “If someone is on the receiving end of domestic violence then they should seek help immediately.”
