Visit Newry and Mourne Museum this festive season

Visit Newry and Mourne Museum at Bagenal’s Castle to discover more about this historic region. The Museum is open seven days a week and entrance is free of charge.

The permanent exhibitions on display include prehistoric material, Newry as a merchant town, the working life of the area and contemporary life.

In addition, there are temporary displays which further highlight the rich heritage and culture of the region including the exhibition “The Performing Arts in Newry and Mourne”.

The exhibition examines the development of performing arts in this area from the 18th century to the present day and the music and drama societies and personalities associated with this growth.

Also open to the public is the temporary exhibition “Brotherhoods and Friendly Societies” which looks at the growth of fraternal and friendly societies in this area.

Throughout the exhibition the vibrant and colourful regalia and memorabilia on display reflects the many common characteristics of lodges, symbolism and rituals, some dating back to the Middle Ages.

If you would like to hear more about the history of the area there is a free tour of the Museum every Sunday at 3pm. Numbers are limited so please book. For younger visitors the museum has planned a number of events to help you to celebrate Christmas this year.

On Saturday 7th, they have “Xmas Xperiments” – a unique science craft session that will put a fizz in your Christmas presents! This is a hands-on fun science experience which includes designing labels and packaging as well as a lovely Christmas product at the end. This activity is appropriate for children aged 7 -11 years.

There will be plenty of arts activities to celebrate the festive period on Saturday 14th. These crafts also complement the “Performing Arts in Newry and Mourne” exhibition, including references to the pantomimes of the past, “oh yes they will”.

On both days there will be two sessions, 10.30am – 12.00pm and 1.30pm – 3.00pm. Numbers are limited to 20 children for each of the workshops and due to growing demand pre booking of places is advisable. There is a cost of £1.50 per child.

You can book by ringing the Museum on 028 3031 3178. An adult must accompany all.
