Alliance South Down spokesperson Councillor Patrick Clarke has welcomed the announcement by the Agriculture Minister that Single Farm Payments totalling £213 million will be made to farmers in early December.

Speaking to Newry Times, Clarke stated, “I welcome that the Department of Agriculture (DARD) will start to make Single Farm Payments with the first payments reaching farmer’s bank accounts from 6th December.

“2013 has been one of the toughest years in the farming sector for many farmers particularly for those who were badly affected by the snow crisis back in March 2013. The arrival of the first Single Farm Payments will make a major difference to the cash flows of many farmers with the majority of payments completed by the end of February 2014.

“I also welcome the upgrading arrangements by the Department of Agriculture for finalising inspected cases which means more Single Farm Payments being made within the coming months.

“More and more farmers are now submitting their Single Farm Payment claims online which means faster processing and payment of their claims being completed quicker by DARD.

Clarke added, “I would encourage more farmers or their agents to consider submitting their Single Farm Payment claims online which will speed up payments in the future to farmers and reduce the amount of form filling and delays waiting for their claims to be processed manually as opposed to online.”
