Hearty condemns £20,000 farm damage incidents
Sinn Fein councillor Terry Hearty has described the damage done to two farms in the Coolderry area over recent weeks as ‘a low and despicable act’.
Speaking to Newry Times Hearty revealed that the damage will cost the affected farmers somewhere in the region of £20,000 to repair.
“Perimeter fences around the farms were completely cut to the ground every four or five metres leaving them beyond repair,” Hearty explained.
“More than 120 round bales we’re also damaged. This will hit these farmers particularly hard given the fodder shortage experienced during 2013 which has meant that farmers had to buy in food for animals. The huge cost involved in purchasing fodder has left many farms running at a loss.
He added, “I would call on those involved in this sort of despicable activity to explain what they hoped to achieve by their actions. The owner of these farms should be compensated for the crippling losses these attacks have resulted in.”
