Police in Newry have arrested a 24 year old man following the theft of a tractor from Magheralin.
Police received a report of blue Ford New Holland tractor being stolen from premises in Magheralin at 12.15am on Wednesday, 20th November.
The gates of the property were removed to facilitate the theft of the tractor. The vehicle was circulated to all patrolling officers and police carried out searches of the local area in an attempt to locate the vehicle.
Shortly after 1.15am officers on patrol in the Newry and Mourne area observed the tractor travelling on Keggal Road and attempted to stop it. The vehicle did not stop and continued in the direction of Meigh. The tractor was abandoned in a laneway at 1.37am.
Police dogs were tasked and were able to pick up a scent. A 24 year old man was subsequently arrested and is currently assisting police with their enquiries.
Newry and Mourne Area Commander, Chief Inspector Davy Beck told Newry Times, “This arrest is the result of excellent collaboration between officers across E District. Officers in both Craigavon and Newry responded promptly and took advantage of all the available options to locate the tractor and those responsible.”
He added, “The tractor will now be examined for forensic opportunities and the vehicle will be returned to its owner.”
