St Mary’s High School makes ‘the news’ with Buttercrane

St Mary’s High School, Newry, has joined forces with Buttercrane Shopping Centre to create the centre’s new youth team of ‘Roving Reporters’ for its social media channels.

Over the past two months, the year 11, 12, 13 and 14 students who are studying media (aged from 15 -18) have been carrying out interviews, sourcing stories and editing packages for social media.

Principal Mrs Margo Cosgrove said, “This is a golden opportunity to partner with the Buttercrane and the local business and retail community to explore current issues through the very popular Twitter platform.”

The girls, who operate through Twitter on social media as @SMaRT_6_, report on what is interesting to them in the local area and things they feel are of interest to their peers.

Recent topics have included Halloween, Faces of the Buttercrane as well as carrying out research on the cherry blossom trees in Newry. This in particular helped rouse the public’s interest toward extending the life of the existing trees along Buttercrane Quay which leads to the centre.
