Donnelly seeks urgent road works in Crossmaglen

Slieve Gullion SDLP Councillor Geraldine Donnelly has raised concerns with DRD Roads Service about the a busy junction of the Square in Crossmaglen and asked for urgent works.

Councillor Donnelly was speaking as Roads Service made their Interim Report to Newry and Mourne District Council.

She said, “The entire Square in Crossmaglen is busy however I asked Roads Service to bring forward improvements at the Culloville Road junction before someone is seriously hurt. The Culloville Road junction is extremely busy and I have raised this same issue on numerous occasions and yet no improvements have yet been made.

“Although there is fairly good signage on the stretch of road approaching the town, for some reason, strangers to the area see part of the square as a continuation of the road. There have been a number of accidents at this location and local people are asking for something to be done to prevent perhaps a very serious accident.

“I have asked if Roads Service could bring forward some measures, such as installing rumble strips or something which will really slow down the traffic and officials have agreed to investigate what they can do,” she revealed.

“During the meeting, I also asked for improvements to be made at the junction of the Drumalt Road, and the B30 Newry Road; this is on a very bad corner and it is very difficult for someone coming off the Drumalt Road to see what traffic is coming either side, it’s also on a hill which only complicates the problem further.

“I also raised the surface of the B30 Newry Road, particularly around Creggan Bridge. The surface is shiny, looks slippy and dangerous; I genuinely fear this will be very dangerous come the frosty weather. I am pleased Roads Service could confirm that they will be carrying out improvements along the route in the near future.

Councillor Donnelly added, “Roads Service have been and continue to be very helpful and they always try and accommodate the issues I raise with them, there is hardly a day in the week I am not onto them about something or some stretch of road.

“I want to thank them for all they do, which no matter how much they do, people like me will be always looking more, but I particularly want to thank them for their recent works on the Concession Road, Crossmaglen and indeed the Culloville Road.”
