McKevitt calls on mobile phone operators to abolish roaming charges
SDLP South Down MLA Karen McKevitt has called on mobile phone operators to follow in the footsteps of Three and abolish roaming charges.
Speaking to Newry Times, McKevitt said, “I greatly welcomed the announcement by Three at the end of August 2013 that they had abolished roaming charges in seven countries including the UK and Republic of Ireland.
“This change has brought many benefits to Three customers who were faced with higher telephone costs because they live or work in a border area. It is now time for other mobile phone operators to follow this example and I would urge them to introduce similar plans in the near future.
McKevitt added, “Last year Ofcom carried out research that showed roaming charges can cost consumers in border areas up to an estimated £300 in additional charges per year, with those living in South Armagh and South Down worst affected.
“It is time surplus charges are stopped and I commend Three for abolishing these unfair charges.”
