A Castlewellan cyclist who peddled his way around Lough Neagh for charity has raised over £800 to help people suffering from depression. Peadar Curran, who works at Down County Museum in Downpatrick, took on the 85 mile Lap the Lough challenge in August to raise money for Aware Defeat Depression. Last week Peadar, a member of Shimna Wheelers Cycling Club in Newcastle, presented the mental health charity with a cheque for £865. Peadar said he couldn’t have raised the money without the help of his family and friends. “I would just like to take this opportunity to thank all those who supported my efforts and donated to such a fabulous charity,” Peadar told Newry Times. “Aware Defeat Depression will use all this money to help people affected by depression. They provide invaluable support to those in our local community battling with depression on a daily basis.” Kieran Hughes, Fundraising Officer with Aware Defeat Depression, congratulated Peadar. “Peadar’s donation will make a real difference to the lives of people affected by depression,” he said. “His donation will go directly towards our community services, including our Helpline and support groups, as well as our education programmes delivered in schools and other group settings,” he added.
