‘Common Fisheries Policy must be on the agenda’ – Rogers

SDLP MLA for South Down Sean Rogers has asked the Minister for Agriculture Michelle O’Neill to focus not just on reform of the Common Agricultural Policy but also discussions around the Common Fisheries Policy.

Rogers raised the matter during Assembly questions.

He said, “I welcome the discussions the Minister has participated in between the EU Council of Ministers and the European Parliament on Common Agricultural Policy (“CAP”) reform. While it is imperative that we bring forward comprehensive proposals around CAP reform we cannot forget the need to bring forward the Common Fisheries Policy.

“Since the Minister has been participating in a meeting regarding the EU budget I am extremely disappointed that the Common Fisheries Policy was not on the agenda.

Rogers added, “This is particularly pertinent in light of the important contribution the fishing industry makes to the Northern Ireland Economy, in particular the fishing ports of Kilkeel, Ardglass and Portavogie.”
