Golfers to Tee Up for ‘Friends’

Paul Burns from Castlewellan is calling upon fellow golfers to swing into action for Friends of the Cancer Centre by signing up for a charity golf day at Mayobridge Golf Club on Saturday 24th August 2013.

As an area known for its large catchment of golfers, Paul thought a golf day would be the perfect all round event for him to run as a fundraiser for the official charity of the regional centre of excellence in cancer care.

Paul has experienced a lot of interest since he first tabled the idea and has already gathered in some £1,400 of sponsorship and a number of prizes. The charity golf competition will be open to either individuals or teams of four players (men, women or mixed).

The 43-year-old joiner, Paul Burns, says; “I’m more than happy to sort out any individuals or pairs of players who wish to team up with others to make a four ball, just let me know. At only £25 per person it is an excellent value day of golf as it also includes a hot meal at the end of your day.

“To book a tee time you can call the golf club direct on 028 3085 0295, or for further information feel free to give me call on 077 3849 2466. As well as participants, I’d also love to hear from anyone who would like to donate a prize or provide sponsorship.

“We’ll also be rounding the day off with an evening at the King’s Inn, Castlewellan, where we’ll have a raffle, music and prize giving from 9pm. Participants are encouraged to bring their family and friends along to enjoy this evening, where there is free admission. The more the merrier as we hope the evening’s raffle will help raise even more funds for Friends of the Cancer Centre.”

About why he is running the event, continued, “Like most people I’ve had a number of people close to me who have been affected by cancer. My father, Malachy, has just recently passed away from pancreatic cancer. I’ve seen first hand how caring and helpful the staff at the Cancer Centre’s Bridgewater Suite have been at helping my father and our wider family circle get through this journey. If it wasn’t for them we wouldn’t have had the extra nine months with him.”

Events & Community Fundraising Manager for Friends of the Cancer Centre, Claire McAuley, says; “I would urge everyone with an interest in golf to dust off your clubs and pick up the phone and call Paul to book your spot on the day. What better way to spend the August Bank Holiday weekend than with a social round of golf with your friends that also helps raise funds for a local charity into the bargain!

“Friends of the Cancer Centre makes a real and meaningful difference to the lives of thousands of cancer patients and their families across Northern Ireland by providing medical equipment, funding specialist medical posts and research and providing a diverse range of patient comforts and care.

Claire added, “Our charity’s funding is always directed towards projects and services which are outside and in addition to the provision already made by the Health Service, responding to needs highlighted by the Cancer Centre’s expert medical staff.”
