South Down top spot for Mountain Bike Trails
SDLP Spokesperson for Culture, Arts and Leisure Karen McKevitt MLA says that South Down is now the top spot for mountain bike trails in Ireland.
Speaking after she attended the official Launch of the already popular mountain bike trails in Kilbroney Park, Rostrevor Mrs McKevitt said, “The mountain bike trails in Kilbroney Forest Park and Castlewellan Forest Park have put South Down on the map with mountain bikers who are travelling from all over Ireland to try them out.
“The challenging trails encompass spectacular views of the Mourne and Cooley mountains so I am not surprised that they have proved a hit with those who enjoy the already enjoy the sport.
“Mountain biking is one of the fastest growing sports in the UK and the high media profile given to these trails through our local media has encouraged many people from the area to give mountain biking a go.
“As part of the World Police and Fire Games 2013 mountain bikers from across the world will flock to Kilbroney Park on Saturday 3rd August and Sunday 4th August for mountain biking events. The fact that these trails have been chosen for these prestigious games proves that we have world class facility.
McKevitt added, “I would like to praise all the agencies that have worked together to successfully deliver the trails particularly Outdoor Recreation NI, Newry and Mourne District Council, Down District Council, Forestry Service and the Northern Ireland Tourist Board.
