Newry and Mourne District Council on the move with new Mobile Licensing app

Following the official launch of the Mobile Licensing App last March by Minister of Regional Development, Mr Danny Kennedy, MLA, Newry and Mourne District Council was invited to attend the APSE (Association for Public Service Excellence) Seminar in relation to employing digital technology in service delivery.

The Licensing Section of Newry and Mourne District Council are pioneering major improvements to the day to day working practices of their Licensing Officers, by using innovative mobile technology to assist the proprietors of licensed premises to comply with the Fire Safety and Licensing legislation by carrying out regular inspections and enforcing compliancy.

Over the course of the last 2 years, a development process has been undertaken by Newry and Mourne District Council and Hillsborough-based software company, Tascomi Ltd.

One of the major benefits is the reduction of a paper-based system, thus greatly saving costs and improving service delivery.

The results have far exceeded everyone’s expectations, radically transforming the day-to-day workflow in the Licensing Section and significantly reducing paper output.

The Council are pleased that this pioneering mobile app helped to meet the council-wide STEM objective to ‘Use less stationery and other resources’. It has had a huge impact on Licensing Officers workloads – resulting in more efficient use of their time and effective scheduling of inspections.

This recent launch of the mobile licensing app is another step in terms of excellent service delivery undertaken by the department.

In September 2012 the Building Control Department comprising of three sections (Licensing, Building Regulations and Estates) achieved full compliance in the Customer Service Excellence (CSE) Award.

This was an outstanding achievement considering it is the first organisation in Northern Ireland to achieve this and only the second out of 1200 across the United Kingdom.

The Mayor, Michael Ruane thanked Tascomi and the Licensing Section for their hard work in developing the Mobile App and congratulated the Building Control Department in achieving full compliance in the Customer Service Excellence (CSE) Award.
