Pairc Elser hosts international GAA game

Pairc Esler played host to the current USA under 14 Feile Champions who were in Ireland to take part in the all Ireland under 14 football feile being held this year in Derry.

The team from San Francisco are current USA under 14 Feile champions and this entitles them to play in the all Ireland event.

The team have visited Wexford and played a game there with them arriving in Newry last Monday evening to play against Newry Shamrocks.

The manager of the USA team is local himself, Alan Downey, who emigrated to the US in 1993 and is currently a PE teacher in San Francisco. Alan made contact with Dermot Russell from Newry & Mourne District Council asking him to arrange this game in Newry and which was attend by Mayor Michael Ruane.

Newry & Mourne District Council provided celebratory medals for this historical occasion, being the first international match to take part in Pairc Esler, and which were presented by the double All Ireland and last Down captain to lift Sam Maguire, DJ Kane.

The chairman of the west coast GAA Committee thanked everyone for the welcome they have received in Newry and paid special tribute to both Newry & Mourne District Council and Newry Shamrocks, for creating fantastic memories of Newry and its surrounding areas not only the children but also heir families.

They also presented the Mayor with a San Francisco team shirt and Newry shamrocks with a picture framed top in order to record this event which now is hanging in Newry Shamrocks Club Room.
