“Council must take the lead in tackling inequality” – McGinn
Following Newry Council’s discussion on the increase in electricity tariffs Councillor Pat McGinn has said that more must be done to tackle poverty and social exclusion and he urged Newry Council to take a leading role on the issue.
The Fews representative said, “Condemnation of these increases and the impact it has on the most vulnerable in particular, is all good.
“However it will be meaningless unless we as a Council can do all we practically can to alleviate some of the hardship. We can work with and support those agencies, voluntary and community groups who play leading roles in tackling poverty and social exclusion.
“Real actions and outcomes which will tackle poverty are essential. We need to focus on health inequalities, poor educational attainment, family support, unemployment and the lack of lifetime opportunities for people.
The Councillor concluded by stating, “If we are to move forward to create a society where everyone has equality of opportunity then we need to have a particular focus in those communities and families who are in greatest need.”
