Rogers warns of avalanche risk

South Down SDLP MLA Seán Rogers has warned motorists to take heed of the road signs in respect of the closure of the Kilkeel Road, Hilltown.

Speaking to Newry Times, Rogers said, “The Kilkeel Road, Hilltown – known locally as the Spelga Pass has been closed due to the risk of an avalanche. I therefore urge all motorists to exercise extreme caution in this area.

“I am aware that the diversion route is via the coast and is very time consuming but this is a serious issue with potentially devastating consequences.

He added, “I have made representations to the Roads Service in this regard.”
