Letters to the Editor, ‘Farmers suffering with adverse weather conditions’

Dear Editor,

The extreme adverse weather conditions since early Friday morning have been causing major and widespread problems in my South Down constituency, particularly in rural areas around Slieve Croob  Clanvaraghan, Dromara, Leitrim, with many roads impassable due to flooding, snow and fallen trees, as well as damaged power lines and telephone lines also leading to people being completely cut off.

I wish to appeal to the Minister for Agriculture regarding the ongoing snow which has been causing major difficulty for the rural farming community of South Down.

I am urging both the Minister and DARD to intervene and help farmers across South Down and other parts of Northern Ireland badly affected by recent adverse weather conditions.

I am therefore appealing directly to Agriculture Minister to act quickly, giving help and financial support to the farmers everywhere who are at great risk of suffering severe financial loss.

Finally, I would like to thank the ongoing rapid response from all the emergency services as well as Roads Service, Northern Ireland Electricity, NI Water, BT, Mourne Mountain Rescue Team and Down District Council who have been working in very inclement and atrocious weather conditions since Friday morning to assist constituents and restore services in many parts of the South Down area.

Yours faithfully,

Councillor Patrick Clarke

Down District Council

Alliance Party
