‘Sinn Féin working to protect fishing industry’ – Hazzard
Sinn Féin MLA Chris Hazzard has congratulated MEP Martina Anderson in amending the report on the Common Fishing Policy in order to secure the fishing quotas for the Irish fishing fleet.
Speaking to Newry Times, Hazzard stated, “There has been genuine concern in the Irish fishing community that European Union quotas are being constantly cut so it is important that our traditional industries are protected from further decline.
“I am delighted that Martina was able to work with her counterpart from Donegal to get an amendment based on an all Ireland approach that will shape the reports recommendations when passed through the parliament.
“This amendment if passed through will in effect be an increase in quotas for the Irish fishing fleet making the industry more sustainable in the longer term and protecting jobs. I am also happy to see the inclusion of a ban on discards which is not environmentally friendly and unsustainable.
He added, “I am sure that Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson will stand up for the Irish fishing industry in ensuring the best possible deal and I will continue to work along side her to do likewise in the Assembly.”
