Bradley to probe closure of Irish Language Newspaper
SDLP MLA for Newry and Armagh Dominic Bradley and party spokesperson on the Irish language is to table a question for urgent oral answer to the Minister of Culture Arts and Leisure regarding the sudden suspension by Foras Na Gaeilge of the contract with the Irish language newspaper Gaelscéal which is in its fourth and final year and due to run until December 2013.
Commenting on the situation Bradley said, “Gaelscéal has been developed into an effective newspaper over the past few short years under its editor Ciarán Dunbar.
“It is very disappointing that just when the paper had achieved a degree of maturity that the plug was pulled on it without any forewarning and in the final year of its contract.
“We have seen other Irish language newspapers meet with a similar fate over the past number of years; this lack of continuity is not the way to develop and grow an Irish language newspaper readership, and Foras Na Gaeilge needs to look again at how best to ensure coverage and publication of news and comment in the Irish language in a sustained and sustainable way.
Bradley added, “It may indeed help to agree longer contracts including a lead-in probationary period when targets can be assessed followed by early intervention if necessary.”
