Important donation to Newry and Mourne Museum

A local businessman, Michael McKeown, has donated two busts of John Mitchel and John Martin to the Museum. The busts are by one of Ireland’s leading sculptors, John Sherlock, and were recently exhibited at the Royal Ulster Academy Exhibition in the Ulster Museum in autumn 2012.

Known as ‘The Newry Radicals’, John Mitchel and John Martin were lifelong friends. They were 19th century patriots, who through their writings publicised the devastating effects of the Irish Famine.

The busts of these two men will shortly be on permanent display in the Museum.

Newry and Mourne Museum is open to the public seven days a week with admission free of charge. For more information on museum events please telephone: 028 3031 3182 or 028 3031 3178 or visit www.bagenalscastle.com.
