Ballyholland woman wins best recycler

Mrs Valerie Collins of Ballyholland was January’s winner of the Recycler of the Month competition.

This competition, sponsored by the Department of the Environment’s ‘Rethink Waste’ campaign in partnership with Newry and Mourne District Council, is to encourage residents to recycle in their blue recycling bin.

Valerie was awarded £50 for her excellent recycling efforts. Her bin was filled with lots of clean glass, plastic, cardboard and paper.

When awarded the prize hamper, Valerie said, “I can’t believe my bin was checked! I’ve been recycling for years, even before I got my blue bin, and I had read about the competition many times.

“Today is my lucky day, I’m going to treat myself to a visit to the hairdressers with my £50.”

Officers checked over 20 bins in Ballyholland and noted that recycling was excellent, with people recycling a great mixture of materials.

The Recycling Officer said, “I was delighted with the level of recycling in Ballyholland; most of the bins checked contained the correct material including glass bottles and jars. There was little to no contamination, it was extremely difficult to pick just one winner.”
