McKevitt wants urgent action on Mayobridge floods
SDLP South Down MLA Karen McKevitt said serious flooding on the Benagh Road near Mayobridge must be dealt with without further delay before someone suffers serious damage.
Speaking to Newry Times, she said, “More than 100 yards of this road has been under deep water for more than two weeks. Residents must take a detour of several miles unless they have a boat.
“No car could get through it and some poor family is going to get stuck unless something is done, and quickly.
“We have been on to Roads Service several times this week but it is more than a year since I flagged up this problem. The road can’t be cleared because the fields on either side are under water but it is time that a long-term solution was found.
McKevitt added, “We just can’t wait until the waters drop and it all happens again next year or next week. The various agencies must co-operate to provide drains to remove surface flooding before the road gets blocked again. Residents and their elected representatives have been patient for long enough.”
