McKevitt calls for transport provision for Carrick School in Burren

SDLP South Down MLA Karen McKevitt has said cuts in school bus provision are going to cause major dislocation for families and schoolchildren.

Speaking to Newry Times, she said: “In Carrick school in Burren for instance, there are 25 children now coming by bus and it is my understanding that only six of them may be eligible under the new arrangement.

“That is a massive cutback by any standard. People in rural areas have very few choices and decisions like this are being made without any consideration of the massive impact they can have on the working lives of the parents.

She added, “I have requested an urgent meeting with the SELB in order to get some sense of realism into the way spending cuts are being implemented.”
