‘Our time, our place on Narrow Water Bridge’ – Rogers

SDLP South Down MLA Sean Rogers has welcomed the passing of a SDLP motion in the Assembly seeking support for the Narrow Water Bridge project.

Speaking to Newry Times, Rogers said: “I am delighted that the SDLP motion supporting the Narrow Water Bridge Project in South Down has been approved. At a recent meeting with Minister Arlene Foster she acknowledged that ‘if it is good for Northern Ireland, then I’m for it’.

“It is in our wider interests that this project is completed and I would urge the Minister for Finance Sammy Wilson to see the real potential in this project which can boost tourism, the economy and North-South relations. This can only be a positive for the Construction, Hospitality and Retail sector in South Down and further afield.

Rogers continued, “This project will become not only a gateway to South Down but a gateway to Northern Ireland. Last year the Republic of Ireland increased its tourism traffic while we are still lagging behind.

“I believe that the bridge which is just over one hour from Dublin Airport will provide a vital link to people visiting South Down and other parts of the North.

“This bridge will become the focal point – from Newcastle to the Boyne there is much to attract visitors from Finn McCool to Cuchullian, from the Tain to the Majestic Mournes, but the bridge will be the new beginning to putting our region on the Tourist Map and in doing so sustain and create many new jobs that are essential in kick starting our economy.

He added, “There is a strong enterprise culture here that is only matched by a good natured friendly people well capable of maximising this golden opportunity.”
