Award-winning Gaeltacht musicians to visit Armagh
Armagh will host two award winning musicians on Saturday evening when Nell Ní Chróinín and acclaimed piper Caoimhín Ó Fearghail play in the Pearse Óg social club as part of the William Kennedy Piping Festival.
The concert, which is being organised by local Irish language organisation CAIRDE Teo in conjunction with Armagh Pipers Club, gets underway at 9pm and also features the Pipers Club’s very own bilingual singing group Macha.
Nell Ní Chróinín is a renowned young songstress from the Cork Gaeltacht of Béal Átha an Ghaorthaidh who recently picked up a TG4 Gradam Ceoil award alongside Armagh’s very own Brian and Eithne Vallely.
Nell is also a previous winner of the prestigious and much sought after Corn na mBan, which she won at the 2010 Oireachtas held in Killarney. Nell is just as comfortable with the slow and intricate airs of sean-nós songs as she is with the faster pace of more lively melodies.
The audience are guaranteed to be left enchanted by her sweet tones.
Nell will be accompanied by another of the TG4 Gradam Ceoil winners, Caoimhín Ó Fearghail, a young musician from the Waterford Gaeltacht of An Rinn who has already earned a big reputation for his uilleann pipe playing.
Caoimhín has also won numerous All-Ireland titles for uileann pipe playing, but he is also an accomplished musician on flute and guitar.
Nell and Caoimhín will also be joined on stage by Armagh Pipers Club’s Irish, Scots Gaelic and English language singing group sensation ‘Macha’. An open mic and traditional session will follow into the wee hours. Local radio personality, Lynette Fay will perform the MC duties on the night.
Tickets cost just £5 and are available from the Cult Úr shop or on the evening of the concert. All proceeds from the evening will go towards Aonach Mhacha – the Irish language and culture centre which is planned for Armagh.
Beidh beirt ceoltóirí iomráiteacha ag teacht go hArd Mhacha ar an Satharn seo chugainn an 17 Samhain nuair a bheas Nell Ní Chróinín agus an píobaire Caoimhín Ó Fearghail a chasadh i gclub sóisialta na bPiarsach Óg mar chuid d’Fhéile Píobaireachta William Kennedy. Cuirfear tús leis an cheolchoirm, atá á heagrú ag CAIRDE Teo i gcomhar le Píobairí Ard Mhacha, ar a 9.
Sár-amhránaí óg í Nell Ní Chróinín as Gaeltach Bhéal Átha an Ghaorthaidh i gContae Chorcaí a ghnóthaigh Gradam Ceoil TG4 níos luaithe i mbliana agus a bhain sí Corn na mBan ag Oireachtas na Samhna 2010 i gCill Airne. Tá Nell ar a chompord le foinn mhalla chasta an tsean-nóis nó le poirt bhríomhara ghasta an nua-nóis. Ach is cinnte go mbeidh an lucht féachana faoi gheasa ag a guth binn.
Beidh duine eile de bhuaiteoirí Gradam Ceoil TG4 ar an ardán le Nell, mar a bheas Caoimhín Ó Fearghail, ceoltóir óg ó Ghaeltacht na Rinne i bPort Láirge a bhfuil ardchlú bainte amach aige cheana féin as a stíl ar na píobaí uilleann. Tá roinnt craobhacha uileÉireann bainte ag Caoimhín fosta agus tá iomrá air as a chuid ceoil ar an fheadóg mhór agus ar an ghiotár.
Chomh maith le Nell agus Caoimhín, beidh an t-ollghrúpa amhránaíochta ‘Macha’ ó Phíobairí Ard Mhacha ar an ardán fosta lena meascán de cheol i nGaeilge agus i nGàidhlig. Beidh seisiún oscailte agus traidisiúnta ar siúl ina dhiaidh. Beidh an ceolchoirm á cur i láthair ag Lynette Fay. Níl ach £5 ar na ticéidí agus is féidir iad a fháil ón siopa Cult Úr nó ag an doras ar an oíche. Rachaidh an t-airgead uilig chun sochair Aonach Mhacha – an t-ionad Gaeilge agus cultúir atá beartaithe d’Ard Mhacha.
