Local couple’s amazing charitable work in memory of daughter

In May of this year Newry Times reported on a fundraising drive that was started by Bessbrook man Lorcan McCooey and his partner Laura Feehan from Camlough after the tragic loss of their baby daughter Beth.

Lorcan McCooey and Laura Feehan presents a Cuddle Cot to Sister Rose Burns (Ward Manager) and Sinead O’Kane (Northern Trust). The couple bought the cots in memory of their late daughter Beth who was born earlier in the year.

This courageous young couple have fundraised tirelessly for ‘cuddle cots’ that enable bereaved parents that little bit of extra time with their baby in the sad circumstances when their baby is born sleeping.

Amazingly, after only six months fundraising the couple have handed over two of the ‘cuddle cots’ to the only two hospitals in Northern Ireland that had not already been provided these by the health trust; Antrim Area hospital and Causeway hospital in Coleraine.

Laura and Lorcan have been assisted by the SANDS charity who liaised on their behalf with the Northern Trust and last week they met with Sinead O’Kane, Head of Midwifery for the Northern Trust who gratefully received the Cuddle Cots from Laura and Lorcan.

Sinead was very pleasantly surprised when Laura and Lorcan also presented her with two brand new Moses Baskets to use with the Cuddle Cots.

It is such a heartening story and an inspiration to see how much the community stood shoulder to shoulder with the Laura, Lorcan and their families at the many fundraising events held.

Laura and Lorcan said on their facebook page in memory of baby Beth, “Thank you so much everyone for helping us achieve something so positive in Beth’s memory in such a short time.”

Heroes are not people who score goals, win formula 1 races, are even wIn gold medals at the olympics.

Heroes in my eyes are people who suffer a tragic loss and get up fighting to help other people in the same position they are in. that is a true display of courage. well done laura and lorcan and everybody that helped also
