Ruane urges parents to be wary of illegal fireworks

Sinn Féin Councillor Mickey Ruane has appealed to parents not to buy or allow their children to play with illegal fireworks.

Speaking to Newry Times, Ruane said,

“Fireworks are a recurring problem year after year. Fireworks are extremely dangerous in the hands of anyone who does not take the appropriate steps to ensure safety. As well as this many members of the public find this time of year as particularly intimidating and unsettling.

“From the outset I would like to state I am not opposed to the use of fireworks for well managed and controlled firework displays.”

He added, “It is highly irresponsible of anyone to sell or supply these very dangerous fireworks to young children and we would call on them to desist from this. If there is a fire or some child is hurt the blame will lie solely on their doorstep.

“Parents need to be aware of the fact that these fireworks could lead to serious injury. I am appealing now well in advance of the Halloween celebrations for parents to play their part in ensuring a safe and happy Halloween for all in the community.”
