McKevitt calls for South Down boxing investment
SDLP Culture, Arts and Leisure spokesperson Karen McKevitt said it is important that boxing clubs in South Down play their part in the boxing investment announced by Culture, Arts and Leisure Minister Caral Ni Chuilin.
The South Down MLA has put down a ministerial question: “To ask the Minister for Culture, Arts and Leisure whether Sport NI have made contact with all boxing clubs in South Down to establish their equipment needs so that they may benefit from her timely announced boxing strategy.”
Speaking to Newry Times, McKevitt said:
“Boxers like Katie Taylor, Michael Conlan and Paddy Barnes have put this sport on the map as never before and brought great public support. So there was a great welcome for the Minister’s re-announcement of a £3 million investment package for boxing.
“We need to harness the current enthusiasm and build the sport up for the future, so the investment needs to get quickly out to the clubs where dedicated volunteers are training and encouraging young people, often in very poor circumstances.”
She added, “The important thing now is for Sport NI to make a rapid and realistic assessment of what equipment is needed and where it is needed.”
